Shoji Hamada (1894-1978). Japanese potter, one of the founders of the mingei (folk craft) movement alongside Yanagi Soetsu. Living National Treasure of Japan (1955). Worked in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture. His partnership with Bernard Leach profoundly influenced Western ceramics. Known for simple, bold brushwork decoration on humble forms.
